The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests through administering a global forest certification system.
Forest management certification involves an audit of a forest’s management by an independent organization to check that it meets internationally and nationally agreed standards of responsible forest management. Forest products such as timber can then carry the FSC label, guaranteeing that it comes from a well-managed forest.
FSC also provides chain of custody certification from forest to end-user and this ensures that FSC materials and products have been checked at every stage of processing so that customers purchasing FSC-labelled products can be confident that they are genuinely FSC certified.
This system allows consumers to be sure that they can identify, purchase and use wood, paper and other forest products that have been produced from well-managed forests and/or recycled materials.
The majority of our work for FSC comprises editing news items for their website and compiling communications for their members. Periodically, FSC also requests our support in producing longer reports.
In 2016, we completed a substantive edit of ‘Implementation of the right to free, prior, and informed consent: Forest Stewardship Council guidelines’, which was well received by the Vanessa Linforth, Permanent Indigenous Peoples Committee Technical Liaison, FSC International. “Thank you so much for all your hard work in a very short time. My first experience of working with Green Ink has been very professional and entirely positive,” she said.
In 2017, we compiled a full report on FSC’s Forest Certification for Ecosystem Services (ForCES). This required editing, design, layout, and translation and production of a Spanish version as well.
