Communications support for numerous projects over several years for an organization working in the climate arena, using writers and editors with expert knowledge of issues related to climate change. The various projects included: policy briefs and inside stories, brochures, reports, print and distribution, and digital products.
The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) was set up to communicate key information about climate change impacts and mitigation measures to policy-makers, government officials, business leaders and other important audiences within the developing world.
The seven-year programme was originally set up in 2010 by the UK Department for International Development (DfID) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS), which provided joint funding. CDKN subsequently expanded its donor base. CDKN was managed by an alliance of organizations led by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in London. While the main programme is coming to a planned end in late 2017, a number of CDKN initiatives are continuing.
We provided communications support to CDKN under a series of framework agreements over the course of the programme from 2012 to 2017.
The work required writers, editors and translators with expert subject knowledge in the area of climate change, as well as experienced project managers capable of handling multiple projects at the same time.
We have undertaken large volumes of substantive editing and rewriting of documents for CDKN, including technical content and policy-related materials; we have provided multi-language translations of many of these documents and also multi-lingual layout services; we have researched photographs and other images, designed materials, graphics and documents; and we have provided printing, digital development and digital content services.
Between mid-2016 and mid-2017, we handled around 70 CDKN assignments of various sizes and requiring various services. Much of this work was done to very tight deadlines.
The Outlook newsletter (left) is one of the projects completed during this period. The newsletter explores how CDKN has supported climate compatible development in Kenya and also features news of a new CDKN office in Kenya. We provided editing, design and layout services for these newsletters. Another example of the support we provided is a synthesis report called Building capacity for risk management in a changing climate (right), which we edited, laid out and proofed. We have worked on numerous other reports for CDKN. Policy development is a key part of CDKN’s work and we provided editing, design and layout for various policy briefs such as Climate impacts on agriculture and tourism: The case for climate resilient investment in the Caribbean (left). We also worked on various digital projects such as the design, coding and production of 650 USB drives containing a collection of CDKN resources for distribution at a conference – for more about this project click here.
CDKN have received much positive feedback from donors on the quality of their communications products. CDKN’s Global Public Affairs Co-ordinator Mairi Dupar told us that she was “very impressed with the job Green Ink did”.
